Beauty may be skin deep,
but the physical and emotional harm
caused by skin disease
affects a child for life
Why Camp Wonder
Skin diseases cause discomfort, pain, disfigurement, disability, dependency or death. The physical and emotional damage caused by childhood skin diseases not only effect the child, but the whole family.
Children's Skin Disease Foundation (CSDF) sponsors medically staffed summer camps in three locations:
- Camp Arroyo, in Livermore California (33 miles south east of Oakland Airport) through a grant from the Taylor Family Foundation.
- Painted Turtle, a camp in Lake Hughes, California (60 minutes north of Los Angeles) for children with skin disease who receive treatment in Southern California, through a grant from The Painted Turtle, a Hole in the Wall Camp co-founded by Paul Newman.
- Victory Junction Gang, a camp in Randleman, North Carolina (20 miles south of Greensboro) for children with skin disease who live in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia, through a grant from Victory Junction Gang Camp, a Hole in the Wall Camp co-founded by Paul Newman.
CSDF's camps are free to children with serious and fatal skin disease. For one week these children can forget their disease and have fun!
For one week the children are able to avoid the staring, stigma and isolation often associated with skin disease. For one week, the children are able to feel "normal." Camp Wonder provides a one week respite during which time they can just be kids.
